Reseller account

Posted by Ajax87, 11-21-2010, 11:11 AM
I have been recently been attracted to choosing a reseller account. I have a few friends that want a few websites up such as a gaming forum and a photography website, I also have a few of my own websites. I don't think either of them will want to pay a lot but at the same time one of them wants to be able to upload significant amounts of photographs and doesn't want to compress them. I thought I might give her 3GB and charge her £5. She has subscribed to vimeo, I'm worried if she might upload high resolution videos it would be a massive strain and I would probably have to charge her more. I will probably find others in the next few weeks since I seem to still meet businesses without websites. I think support would be important since I doubt I could fix all their problems/have the time. At the moment profit is not a massive concern - I would be happy to break-even or just make a small profit. I thought about a budget of £15 - £20, maybe even £25.. I'm not sure I'd have enough clients to justify the latter. I'm not sure about the billing system. Majority of the clients will be based in the UK. I think I'd prefer Linux. Cheers! You have a good budget. You can get a WHMCS license from LicencePal.com for just $12.95 USD/£9.00 GBP a month. That leaves you a good £6.00-£16.00 to spend on a decent Reseller account with plenty of diskspace and bandwidth. I suggest you stick to realistic hosting plans though. Go for plans with realistic quotas so you can actually use all of the diskspace and bandwidth. Be careful of hosts that do extreme overselling as they're the ones who tend to overload their servers more = poor uptime/slow performance, etc. Good Luck!

You can use this link to request quote from hosting providers.

I'm sure you'll find a lot of UK hosts on here willing to provide you with the necessary support you require. WHMCS is probably the best billing system for your needs. If you're just starting out is automation a big deal for you, could you invoice the customers directly until you get a bit more custom?

Personally, I wouldn't trust any other billing system. Dev's at WHMCS are great.

I appreciate the reply. I am concerned with overselling, but at the same time I want to oversell by a small margin because I know my clients wouldn't use the entire bandwidth and will be more swayed by other hosts offering more and I'm afraid my "charm"/relationship won't entirely win them over. Thanks for the advice it has helped. Do they oversell themselves? I would like to know. I notice that they are giving a lot for almost nothing in addition to support. I noticed they don't allow overselling. I wouldn't need to oversell I worked out even with minimal clients. I could invoice them directly because I would only have a few and I know them personally but I'm not familiar with accounting, since someone else deals with that on the other websites. £10 p/m is a large addition to overheads..

It's not so bad overselling with Shared hosting because the owner of the account isn't able to use most of the diskspace/bandwidth, due to low traffic websites. Very few Shared hosting clients will use 90% of their quota. But with a Reseller account the diskspace/bandwidth is used up a lot quicker as it can be resold to other clients. So you really want a reseller hosting package with a realistic quota and work from that. If your own provider is doing extreme overselling and you are doing a lot of overselling you will get a lot of problems a get bad rep for having bad management, etc. You also have to think about other restrictions like CPU/memory limits. A lot of hosting providers will charge you for diskspace and bandwidth they know you won't even use, or if you do need it, know you will reach other resource limits first like CPU/memory limits. So it's best to just pay for what you need and upgrade plan/service when you need to.
