Need a provider for small-time sites

Posted by AnarchistQuaker, 03-15-2010, 09:46 PM
I'm looking for some recommendations for a hosting reseller plan that fits my certain needs. I'm looking to create and maintain all the content for my clients, all of whom will have their own domains but very, very small websites. So, I'd like a reseller account that allows me to: Resell domains at a price competitive with goDaddyManage all my clients' sites and emails from one interface (i.e., not have to maintain and use the end-user's control panel). They won't be managing their sites, I will.Keep everything simple, simple, simple. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest you try direct admin reseller hosting if you want everything absolutely simple without managing a vps yourself. I do not think that you can have a Web Min reseller account unless you get a VPS or Dedicated Server with it.

Basic cPanel reseller will do. Don't know why webmin or a VPS was recommended. If you're sites are small then any reseller would do, the only issue you'll have is probably with that domain reseller. It's very hard for resellers to try to compete with GoDaddy. Many other big time registrars can't even compete with GoDaddy. So if you make this your number 1 priority, you'll either be disappointed or won't find anything to be disappointed about. otherwise, you can check out netearthone for a domain reseller. Their costs are pretty competitive but they can't fully compete with GoDaddy. And get a reseller with another provider and keep everything separate. This way, if something goes wrong, it'll go wrong with one thing and not with everything you have.

Yeah, with your very basic sites and requirements, you can use any cPanel reseller plans from any reliable host providers out there, and you can just manage your clients domains, emails and databases by yourself. For the domain reseller, I agree with njoker, it's very hard to compete with GoDaddy's costs. Why don't you use GoDaddy as your domain reseller provider?

A cPanel account with Add-on domains will do for what your requirements are. No need for any expensive or complicated reseller account. Some hosts offer domain reseller accounts even with plain hosting accounts.

It would be good if you can let us know how many clients you have. While cPanel will work, you may run into many problems because: 1. They will not be able to access a cPanel interface of their own. 2. They may need access to create Emails, FTP accounts, MySQL Databases and this can only be done through the cPanel interface. 3. Security risks involved in having so many users access your account through (presumably) FTP. For example a user can access the files of another user even though they can only view files in their own directory. (i.e. paths like ../otheruser) Depending on your space and bandwidth needs which should be quite minimal since you mentioned those are small websites, I would recommend that you find a host providing reseller hosting with no more than 5GB space and 50GB bandwidth to save on unnecessary prices. Reseller hosting will allow you to have a WHM interface to manage all your clients. They will each receive a cPanel interface (you can create their cPanel accounts through WHM) so the problems listed above of so many users being hosted on a cPanel account will be solved.

Nearly any reseller plan should be able to accomidate your needs. If you like GoDaddy's domain registration pricing, you can register domains through GoDaddy and host where ever you want. You don't have to register domains at the same place you host your sites. Check out the Advertising Forums : Web Hosting Offers : Reseller Hosting Offers section of the forum for a long list of possible reseller hosting plans. Good luck with your search.

All control panels allow reseller to have complete control over customer's hosting account. With cpanel, you can login cpanel from whm and switch cpanel between hosting accounts. Some providers provide free reseller domain account at competitive price ($7.95 per year or even cheaper).

cpanel is widely used control panel

Best to put in for a leased or owned WHMCS license from WHMCS.com or LicensePal.com (official WHMCS reseller = cheaper costs). The WHMCS license includes a free eNOM account so you can sell domains and SSL certificates.

I would not compete with Godaddy about pricing, cause you will need to lean on some registrars, and Godaddy price is low already. You might still sell domains at higher costs, if you can provide some add-on features. About the hosting control panel, I would highly suggest DirectAdmin, that you can control reseller and end-users levels at one login. Don't need to switch over as cPanel/WHM. And DA is much more stable from my experience.

please correct me if i am wrong cpanel is widely used control panel and it is easy to transfer hosting from cpanel to cpanel..... and the account is not transferred from direct admin to cpanel or vice versa

Posted by gate2vn, 03-17-2010, 04:17 AM
It's very easy to transfer account from DA to DA too. There is no tool to convert DA to cPanel account yet, but from cPanel to DA, you can. We have done it many times without any trouble.

Posted by mudassirjaved, 03-17-2010, 04:56 AM
it opens in port 2222.. the port 2222 is not working

Posted by HostXNow_Chris, 03-17-2010, 05:00 AM
I think cPanel is much better than DirectAdmin, especially features wise.

Posted by gate2vn, 03-17-2010, 05:00 AM
Your ISP or the firewall on your computer blocks port 2222 then

Posted by gate2vn, 03-17-2010, 05:03 AM
I don't want to start another fight to compare cPanel and DA There are many other threads about this already. Search on board again if you want to read. Based on MY EXPERIENCE, DA is much more better. Features are good. More stability. Much better support from vendor.
