Slow Time to First Byte

Posted by Jon12345, 02-15-2013, 08:52 AM
For some reason, my time to first byte has slowed down on my site. Here is the test results: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/130215_6A_DW7/ What causes a slow time to first byte? Is it the amount of html on the page? The CPU usage at the time? Load Averages? mysql queries? The page in question is a forum. Thanks, Jon

I think it has something to do with mysql, I had a VPS that would work fine for static content but loading wordpress would sometimes take 15 seconds for TTFB, once wordpress has loaded loading another page would be fine it's just TTFB takes long when wordpress has not been accessed in a while..

This can happen due to many reasons like below: 1. What type of hosting do you have? shared, VPS OR dedicated server? 2. How many websites do you host on a single server? 3. If you are on VPS OR dedicated server what is the server specification?

1. I have VPS with urljet 2. I've got about 4 but only one that gets significant traffic. 3. Not sure of the specification, but Time to fist byte is about 1.5 seconds but before Xmas it was about 0.5 seconds. So something has changed. It isn't the amount of traffic.

I would suggest you to run top -c command from SSH and monitor the load of your VPS continuously for some time and see which process is consuming more VPS resources.

I am not very informed on running commands via SSH. I do have WHM and CPanel, if I could use those in any way?

You can view current running processes from WHM itself. (Home >> System Health >> Show Current Running Processes)

I see that now. It has a long list of what is running, but nothing showing a percentage of what resources it is taking up.

I've found the problem now. It was a plugin on my forum that showed spiders on the site. Removed that and all is back to normal. What an effort!

Glad to hear that you found the problem. For future reference, You can take a help of WHM feature Daily Process Log. (Main >> Server Status >> Daily Process Log). This will show you your server’s consumption of processing power and memory, averaged over the course of the selected day. For more details, visit following documentation of cPanel: http://etwiki.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/v...MDocs/CPUusage
