VPN client on a shared server - is it a security problem

Posted by Prestahost, 06-08-2012, 04:19 AM
Hello. Assume shared server with many users. One user needs to connect with a 3th party server throuhg Open VPN. This is necessary for some kind of data exchange on port 80. Also assume that a hacker takes over the third party server. Is the VPN tunel a security hole allowing some kinds of attacks? Thank you.

If you need to install an OpenVPN server on your server just for that one customer, then you are possibly opening yourself up to potential issues, yes. If the Open VPN server is on the other side then the guy just has a secure connection to you nothing more, the only thing you should then pay attention to is the client software he is using and if there are any potential security issues with that.

TheTop: thank you! The server is on the other side, and I will write the software using the tunel by myself (just some XML RPC php stuff). If I understood well, this should be safe, OK?
