What do you think of VMware - riverbed ?? VMware claims, Riverbed Steelhead appliances accelerate the performance of applications between data centers, remote offices and mobile workers by five to 50 times and in some cases up to 100 times.

Would have to know a lot more about your environment, what your trying to do with it, what you hope to accelerate, actual traffic throughput, connection size, etc. A lot goes into the equation of how much a steelhead will help you. We've seen several companies have a lot of benefit from them. They do work.

Agreed. The benefit may depend largely on your enviornment but in general they are a great product.

I've seen them used to great effect on local to datacentre and inter datacentre replication links - well configured they really work great!

I can't say enough good things about them.... we tried them a few years back and the product sucked. We gave them another shot about 4 months ago and we are absolutely blown away by the performance gains we've seen. We have one of their larger units in our data center at our core and have deployed 15 units to customer sites. We expect this to grow over the next 6-12 months. The single biggest gain we've seen is the speed increase to files hosted on Microsoft Servers as well as access to a large Microsoft Exchange cluster. It also has a wonderful impact on SharePoint Hosting. We've seen very significant increases in access time for to our Business Objects, Peoplesoft, Oracle, SAP and Solomon/GP environments. We haven't seen a significant increase in speed on our XenApp farms, but have noticed some difference. I was a major opponent of theirs a few years back and am now a huge fan. They've really done an amazing job with that product. Sirius
