reseller account with antivirus protection

Posted by sunshines, 04-18-2004, 05:51 PM
I'd like to know , why almost no company offering reseller accounts offer email AV protection? Anyway, do you know any offering it? I'd like to know, what are limits per emails (per hour, daily) sent out through smtp on reseller acconts usualy?

My guess is antivirus protection would be an incredible load on the server.

Clam AV is a well-known favourite, and so long as the mail server is stand-alone, the loads are really a non-issue. Most companies place at least a "per day" limit of around 2000 emails sent, on a shared mail server, per user. Simon

This is how I see it... Users should, perhaps even MUST be running AV on their own PC's A server based solution will only IMO give them a false sense of security. Apart from that there is the server loads and licenseing prices.....

We had it, we removed it 90% of users said that it's not our responsibility to be filtering for virus's but the end users. Also the legal ramifications if someone did get infected.

I agree with the above two posts. If a user wants virus protection, there are plenty of paid and free AVs they can install on their own computer. And if a webhost decides to install their own AV on the server, it will only give the clients bait to later point the finger at the webhost and say it is their fault for letting their machines get infected blah blah blah. I think webhosts should have an AV on their server to check that there is no virus distribution on their servers, but they shouldnt be held responsible for checking for viruses in email. They have enough on their plate.

Agreed... that being said if you are setting up a dedicated box for one client only or perhaps a business mail server you may wish to install server based AV... but on shared servers... no! from me

I know a number that offer it. Many though while they do offer it, do not list it on their websites. It's best that you email the ones you are inetrested in to ask if they do offer such a service. Our you can use the host quote feature to request it; http://www.webhostingtalk.com/request.php One webhost I remember that does offer email AV scanning is HostNexus.com

One problem is, that many endusers do never update their virus definition files - and therefore the virus can come in, infect the machine and spreads through your systems. A good web host should at least block particular file extensions (VBS / EXE) and the associated files.

Blocking file extensions is ludicrous. Anyhow, you provide an email service therefore I believe it's a host's a duty to try and provide virus free email. Our clients know that our anti-virus solution won't catch all viruses (ClamAV will catch 99%) and when a new virus comes out it takes a while for signatures to be updated. I can't imagine anyone flaming their host for filtering viruses. It's not as if it mistakes and it's not as if people enjoy receiving viruses.

Why would blocking particular file extensions be ludicrous? I support 500 users at the company I work for and you would be surprised how many users still try to execute .exe files that arrived in their inbox. Since those are blocked now, the number of virus outbreaks has been significantly down. It's a simple but easy help to make email more secure and to protect your users - here clients.

We use Mailscanner + ClamAV on every server we run. We have only the harmful extensions blocked, but we see it working day in and day out. While it won't stop every virus out there it does help our users fight the barage of viruses that are being tossed at them daily. If you have a server that is so overloaded you cannot run ClamAV there are more problems than just viruses going on.

We too have Mailscanner+Clam and none of our clients have every complained about viruses or similar issues. They understand that we are simply trying to help them deal with the avalanche of viruses on a daily basis. If properly communicated , I am sure they would understand as they did in our case. True, in the end it is upto the customer and his/her needs. But most of them see value in email protection/antivirus. Regards,
