I've been trying to install ioncube. I hound a tutorial i tried to follow here
http://www.webhostgear.com/77.html
In step 6, it said to edit php.ini and then it said to find where the zend extenions are so i did the search for zend_extension and came up with nothing and the with just zend.. same result.. so actally where to i put
zend_extension = /usr/local/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_5.2.so
within php.ini

Just put it at the very end.

It's just assuming that you have the Zend Framework compiled and installed on your server. You'd either want to place it at the end, or search for any other .so lines that might be in there.

Which control panel are you using? In cPanel you can put it directly in the main apache conf file.
If you are using Plesk then you will have to put the line in a file
/etc/php.d/zend.ini

Is zend enabled in the server? Is it a cpanel server? php -v gives you the details..
It should be something like the following.
----------------------------
php -v
PHP 5.2.9 (cli) (built: Apr 27 2009 23:44:54)
Copyright (c) 1997-2009 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.2.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2009 Zend Technologies
with eAccelerator v0.9.5.3, Copyright (c) 2004-2006 eAccelerator, by eAccelerator
with Zend Extension Manager v1.2.2, Copyright (c) 2003-2007, by Zend Technologies
with Zend Optimizer v3.3.3, Copyright (c) 1998-2007, by Zend Technologies

You can compile it via cpanel scripts /scripts/easyapache
To compile it from source make sure the modules is in same extension directory as in php.ini
