Xen or Openvz and why?

Posted by PCS-Chris, 01-17-2010, 10:57 AM
Perhaps do a search? I generally see one of these threads pop up every other week. There is no better one, it depends on personal preferance and what you want to achieve from the platform.

One should always select it on the basis of requirement.

i have install openvz and we have some problem to install csf and .... . i am worry about xen stable . how about it?

Xen is a bit tricky to manage so make sure you read the docs carefully before you switch over.

you have to load the Iptables at the node xen is hardware virtualized very stable, VE's run like a dedicated server

how cna i convert my server from openvz type to xen?

Posted by HostingBig, 01-17-2010, 11:59 AM
If were you I would Re image it safest way to remove open vz but if you must uninstall ---------------------------- # rpm -qa | grep vz & remove all of the open vz packages rm -rf /vz to remove the rest you will want to install a LVM to run you VPS's on

You don't really have to remove openvz, just install the xen kernel and boot it. I've done so on a production server no issues as of yet.

Or if you are feeling brave there is a kernel with openvz + xen support and you can run both. I wouldn't reccomend it though Both OpenVZ and Xen are stable technologies though. I have personally found Xen to be more stable than OpenVZ though.

DigitalLinx is correct you can just install xen & boot to it Its just me I like a clean server to work with

I would prefer Xen.

Can you post a link please, never heard of such kernel before, would love to test it out. Thank you.

ovzkernel-xen http://download.openvz.org/kernel/br....6.18/current/

Interesting, if it's stable would be a neat solution on powerful servers, it would save colo space.

Posted by HostingBig, 01-17-2010, 01:15 PM
Maybe I will try it on a test server it would seem to me the 2 platforms would be fighting over resources and would defeat the benefits of running XEN stand alone or am I missing something?

Posted by DigitalLinx, 01-17-2010, 01:18 PM
Well of course, have to plan out resources well, can't just allocate most of the memory to xen and have almost nothing left for the base OS and the VZ containers. But on a buffed up server with good amount of memory, it should be a neat solution.

I personally prefer OpenVZ due to the higher performance that comes along with it.

Posted by tsj5j, 01-18-2010, 12:50 PM
Xen, definitely. It offers : a.) a lower level of virtualization b.) a guarantee on allocation of RAM c.) swap Furthermore, OpenVZ's calculation of allocated memory (instead of actual, used memory) as memory usage is problematic for applications like Java which allocate alot of memory in advance for predicted future use.

I'm slightly biased here, but I would definitely go for Xen with the proper VM isolation, even if there is a slight decrease in performance. I simply wouldn't want another user's VPS to affect mine significantly!

I think Xen is the best for the visualization compared to OpenVZ.
