Does your company have a network security team?

Posted by techdude20078, 12-15-2009, 12:45 PM
Management for the technology services and web hosting firm that I work for has decided that we need to start a network security team. We already have a few guys that deal with the network's security, but they decided to create a specific team to: secure the network/servers and respond to threats, issue news regarding threats on the Internet to our customers (do some PR for the company basicly), assist in designing policies for our consulting clients + securing and monitoring their networks, etc. Since I am going to be joining this new team, I get to help out with naming the new "division". I'm just wondering if anyone has an employer who has a network security team and what it is called...or if anyone has suggestions for what to call it. It would be easy to just label as network security...but it sounds like we are also assisting consulting customers with their workstation's security needs as well..... Some thoughts are: Network Security (just basic...) Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT...somewhat a well known name for network security) Computer & Network Security Team

Is it specifically just the network or also the security of the servers (kernels, software etc) ? I like the sound of NCU, Network Control unit.

They want it to practically be in charge of security of all computerized systems: including kernals, software, etc. The idea is to consolidate all of the "security experts" into a central division.

Since it's not just network security, systems as well, then ITS (IT Security). That's my contribution.

Cool, let us know what you come up with and decide on.

We have come up with 3 ideas, what do you like best? 1. Information Technology Security Team (ITST) 2. Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT...the classical term) 3. Computer System Response Team (CSRT)

I hate the ideas of specific security-minded people in organizations, because it always boils down to an "us vs them" scenario where the "users are always trying to do something stupid" and the "security guys are always trying to make our jobs harder". These days, it's my personal belief that anyone involved in any kind of an administrative duty should have a firm handle on security from the get-go. That's not always possible in all companies, but it's on my personal wish-list.

Strategically, the idea of centralizing all your security into one place has the risk that security is then left to the specialist team and everyone else feels they can ignore it and leave it to the team. You can probably manage this by getting the team to do regular training (or "roadshows" if your company is big enough), emphasizing that security is a team effort. Also, catching other teams doing the right thing (and occasionally the "wrong" thing) and making a big fuss about the "right thing" could make a difference. There are obviously two roles here - Security response team - responding to an incident and managing it quickly and effectively. Security maintenance - ensuring all teams throughout the company are pro-active in security maintenance. In the past when I worked for a major telco, we implemented security auditing measures so it was possible to look at nearly all devices and know if they'd been patched to the latest standards. This isn't trivial, but can be really worth it for a larger company.

I actually manage server security (and a friend helps too), but we also use The Planet. And because they offer Alpha Advanced Services Security & Monitoring Bundle, we have that. They act like a personal security team who monitors your server 24/7/365. Very Helpful

Every large company I have ever worked in called the department "Information Security" or InfoSec for short. They came in, took care of a security problem and you never saw them again.
