Server slowing down

Posted by ihavenoidea, 10-28-2009, 12:54 PM
Hi I've recently started up a filehost on a Intel Core2Quad Q9650 (3.0 GHz), its got 8GB ram. My file host has blown up (in terms of visitors/downloads), in the past few days. Because of soo many concurrent downloads I increased the apache request limit from 150 to 500. Now in the past few days its been doing about 150-170 requests just fine. But todays the requests have gone up to 250 and the site is struggling I would have thought this kinda server would be able to handle this many requests. The CPU loads are still only 0.7 and memory usage is only 12%. Whats the problem here? EDIT: Hmmm.. the apache requests doesnt go over 256, but im sure I set it to 500. What's your iowait? If that's normal, you could be hitting limits on the uplink.

iowait? Sorry still learning all the server lingo lol Let me check my bandwidth usage.. im pretty sure its got to do with the apache

Yay edits. You probably didn't set ServerLimit when you changed MaxClients. It must be set at least as high as MaxClients, then you need to completely stop and then start Apache.

What is your server port speed at? 10/100/1000Mbps? If you are hitting the limit of the port speed, this will slow down everything and cause you to be unable to access the server via SSH. Also would explain why you aren't reaching your apache limits. Always an important thing to check, just because your server isn't overloaded doesn't mean your port isn't as well. Definitely something to look into with your hosting provider.

Ok I've had the ServerLimit set to the same as MaxClients and things are running smoothly Quick question though... What would be the best number to set for the MaxClients and ServerLimit? Its currently at 500, should I go higher?

With the power of your machine, it should be able to go higher, 750+ no problem, especially if you are doing just file sharing. Did you figure out your port speed?

Hmmm... Well atm the server loads are 3.27 (its showing that warning icon instead of the green on cpanel). My port speed is 100mbit, I'm planning on upgrading that to 250mbit soon. EDIT: Its reached 4.0 now (I've only got 4 cores =S)
