FTP Problem

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-09-2009, 07:37 PM
Hello, I'm using FTP through filezilla to connect to my site and all of a sudden have received an error from filezilla saying it can't retrieve directory listing. Its not a server issue as far as I and our server management team can see. I have looked at a few things on the net, but they didn't help. Any Ideas? I use: Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2 32 Bit OS Server is Centos OS with Cpanel/WHM installed. This is the message from filezilla: Get this message also on a mac, and at two different internet connections also. Any help will be much appreciated.

switch off passive mode in your ftp client, probably the firewall settings in the server are changed

I try to switch to active mode instead of passive, but get this message from filezilla. Thanks for reply.

I suggest trying to ftp after turning off your firewall to isolate the issue . Btw..whats the source ftp server ?

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-09-2009, 08:01 PM
Tried with server firewall disabled and stopped, still no luck. What do you mean by the source ftp server?

Nothing can be done without some sample ftp details to a test domain created ..would be great if you could PM them ..(only if you trust)

OrangeHosting is this a VPS or a dedicated server? Which firewall you tried switching OFF, on the server or on your PC?

Posted by activelobby4u, 09-10-2009, 06:27 AM
Bulls eye ..try switching off your local firewall as well

Posted by inspiron, 09-10-2009, 06:56 AM
I think the problem might be caused by the firewall running on your computer and your router.

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-10-2009, 01:57 PM
This is a dedicated server. And I tried turning off the firewall on the server, not my local one. I have comodo firewall and windows firewall running. I also have this same problem on my mac though . Could be router, but then again I have tried this on someone elses internet connection. Macbook Pro tried on 2 diffrent internet connections (filezilla) PC tried on just 1 internet connection (filezilla)

What about if you FTP from the command line?

Posted by TheServerExperts, 09-10-2009, 02:20 PM
Can you try a diferent FTP client? you can try these free version (very good ftp clients) http://www.coreftp.com or http://www.leapware.com

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-10-2009, 02:29 PM
What do you mean by that? I'll try that leapware one it looks good. CoreFtp I tried but it said I had the incorrect pw, even though I copy and pasted a bunch of times.

If neither work you could try SmartFTP

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-10-2009, 07:49 PM
No luck turning off the firewall on my computer. Going to try SmartFTP i guess now

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-10-2009, 09:57 PM
I get that from SmartFTP now too.

Well from outside its hard to guess what's going wrong with your FTP server. Anyways try following steps: SSH to your server as root and give following commands: /scripts/fixproftpdconf after that /scripts/fixproftpddupes and finally /scripts/upcp --force If all fails, hire an experienced server admin to investigate and rectify the cause.

If all FTP client dont work, then its almost 100% your connection. Can you try to change some settings in your modem/router you can try to put your local/nat ip into DMZ mode. Open port 21 in your modem/router firewall. DMZ would probally fix it, until you can figure out what it is. PS: can you connect to other ftp servers? Cheers

Hi, did you checked the home folder permission. check the permission around there.

Putting my router into DNZ mode probably would fix it, but it would make my computer very vulnerable. I'll try running those commands vinsar, hope they work, thanks .

Can I just say that this problem isn't with OrangeHosting's connection, I seem to be experiencing the same problem with the server as well.

Posted by OrangeHosting, 09-12-2009, 03:50 PM
SOLVED. We opened a support ticket with Cpanel and it ended up being a issue with the IP.Tables.

Hello, it would be due to missing module ip_conntrack_ftp. Type this at the shell prompt. modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp

Hey, the problem is fixed on our server. That could be a solution though, thanks anyways.
