Hi I understand that i can access my website using this syntax rather than domain.com directly, in server's default configuration. http://www.my-web-hosting.com/~my-username/ I am also aware that some web hosting provider might have disabled it, as claimed, security reasons. I want to find out what security reasons might cause this? I'm trying to say, what are the reasons for them to disable this? Last but not least, if i want to disable it also, how can i do it? Thanks!

it's depend of your control panel software (if you use any). for cpanel for example, this feature disabled because user may eat you traffic and it will count by bandmin as you server traffic not this user. Also some other software can't resolve which user what is doing without FQDN (fully quialified domain name). In cpanel you can disable it in WHM - Tweak Security - mod_userdir Tweak menu. Hi I'm using a web hosting account under ServInt's network. It's using cPanel, but the /~username/ thing is actually working. Does this means that it's enabled by default, or it's disabled by default but enabled manually? Also, if someone access cPanel via another domain on the server, does it eat up the domain account's bandwidth instead of the rightful one? And if i upload something through the File Manager, which domain's bandwidth does it count on? If i use http://www.my-web-host.com/~username/, user visits the website and it counts on my-web-host.com. If i download a file, say a test file of 5MB and i use this URL too, it also counts on my-web-host.com? It's all about how bandmin is able to recognise right? Lastly, how to enable or disable? And can i enable for particular accounts only, but not all?

Yes, if you are using http://www.yourmainsite.com/~username/ or http://yourIP/~username/ all the bandwidth of user site will be counted to yourmainsite.com. You can disable in WHM - Tweak Security, or disable mod_userdir in Apache config file

Hi I think i better catergorise my questions, but thanks for your answer. 1. If i use the File Manager in cPanel, but login using http://www.not-my-domain.com/cpanel, and i upload a file, is the bandwidth counted towards not-my-domain.com? Or does the bandwidth eating thing counts towards accessing web pages only? 2. Am i able to enable/disable for some users only? 3. I have some email addresses and forwarders. I've created a forwarder, and when someone emails user1@domain.com, the email will also forward to user2@domain.com. In this scenario, is additional bandwidth considered? TIA.

1. File manager and generally control panel traffic should be a not counted. As minimum this is not depend from which domain you login. 2. Yes, if you are systemadmin on server. 3. Yes. In + Out traffic will count. But, usually mail traffic is too small for remember it.

Hi Thanks, i'll reiterate on (3). I'm saying it's both on domain.com, which is in the same server, same account. It counts too?

no, in this case no. just because mail between local users not send out from server and so not count as bandwidth.

I'm just worried about how bandmin works. So it just records bandwidth/data transfer consumed, as data flows in and out of server, and not in and out of account, including email accounts yeah? TIA

hrmm thats a good point i know plesk allows 'web users' and theres also a setting in appache that uses a determined folder like "public_html" for this etc.

No, it count web and ftp traffic by log files per each ip. Also Cpanel software count B/W per domain basis (each domain have a own web log file for this). smtp and pop traffic counted by eximstats. Generally bandmin or Cpanel not count any traffic which generated by php scripts because this can't determined by any log files. As result Cpanel and Bandmin bandwidth usually less than showed on DC bandwidth reports. Sometimes around in 3-5 times.   Different control panel use different method for counting B/W. I heard that Plesk more precise with B/W counting.

we have enabled mod_userdir Protection but i want to exclude protection for some user so there is such a option to do this select domain to exclude mod_userdir Protection & then save it then i restarted apache web server but seems not working for me now whattttttttt ???????

I don't think it works that way. Up at the top of the list you'll find one for "DefaultHost (nobody)", you don't need to click the checkmark (I doubt), but all you need to do is put the username in the textbox (Additional Users) to the right of it.
