reading data from 3ware raid1 array without 3ware controller?

Is there a way to read a disk that is part of a RAID1 Pair of a 3ware 9500s controller on another sata controller? One thing I like about adaptec sata raid controllers is that I can pull one of the drives of the raid array and just plug it into any normal onboard sata controller and the disk shows up as a normal disk with nothing extra to be done. When I pull a disk off the 3ware controller that is raid1 or even JBOD, no volume is being seen by a normal controller - it shows up as 0 GB. Is there a trick? I worry that I'm now dependent on the 3ware controller and in an emergency, or if the model becomes difficult to get before I'm finished using it, I'll be out of luck until I can get a new identical? controller... If there is no way to read the raid-1 or even JBOD disks that have been written on a 3ware controller using a normal sata controller, in a pinch can other 3ware controllers read eachothers arrays? What is the backward/forward compatibility of 3ware arrays among 3ware controllers?

Hello, It's always a good idea to have spare parts on hand. We've had older 3Ware controllers throw a disk from time to time but not really catastrophically fail. Since 3Ware controllers write DCB's (Disk Control Blocks) to each disk you can swap in an identical controller and boot the system. The units will be recognized and you're back in business. Purchase a backup controller and your worries will be eliminated (mostly ) Adam Ward
