What's your distro? issue hostname "your.hostname.here" to change your nameserver edit /etc/resolv.conf

If you use any control panel to manage your vps, you can also use that.

Usually merely changing the hostname inside the VPS does not reflect the changes made. You would have to contact your web hosting company and ask them to change the hostname. This if I am correct is true in the case of a OpenVZ VPS node. You can set the hostname by following the steps given below, Set the hostname for the IP address of the server. Leave the 127.0.0.1(loopback) address untouched. /etc/sysconfig/network in the case of Fedora/Redhat/CentOS would contain the following Set the hostname using the hostname command, #hostname abc.domain.tld If all is well, you should be able to see the new hostname after logging out and logging back in from the shell.

Best option to contact your hosting provider

You can set a hostname from your VPS itself but it will only last till you reboot your VPS. The hostname on a VPS has to be set from the host server, so the only option you have is to contact your hosting company. Regards.
