What is (usually) the scope of managed VPS

Is it just installing control panel, LAMP etc and managing security and updates or something else?

That is different for every provider. It would be good to ask them before signing up. Some only provide installing and configuring the control panel, securing/hardening, and basic needs above that. Some offer full management and unlimited admin hours. Also check their average and guaranteed response/resolution times. Some will respond in minutes and fix (at least most problems) within hours, some take a few days just to respond. Make sure you ask first.

There was a similar thread few days ago, you might find some answers to your question. But as RDO says, it depends from the company what they offer under managed VPS plan. http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1514274

Hi, If you are providing this, then it is your decision how much level of support you can provide for a managed VPS. Whether to limit only for installation or troubleshooting ongoing issues as client's required. If you are the VPS provider, you can define your managed support in the way you want, but usually if client comes in for managed support, then they actually expect more and more out of it.

We would recommend checking with concerned hosting on what comes under management and what does not As its entirely on the hosting company policy Probably a chat with them will help on getting better understanding on the exact support provided

Depends on your management plan needs. Basic Management usually has these features: 1 ) Install and patch OS 2 ) control panel upgrades 3 ) Ping monitoring These management plans are usually reactive. You submit a ticket and someone starts working. Example "Hello, my server is going slow, please take a look" Full Management has these added features: 1 ) Software installation 2 ) Service configuration and fine tuning 3 ) Periodic security scans 4 ) 24x7 monitoring with debugging and fix in case of problems. 5 ) Daily backups, even custom ones if you need them. These management plans are usually proactive. Someone does the work and then you get a report without need to submit a ticket. Example "Hello, your server performance has been bad during the last 2 hours. A technician has reconfigured and optimized your database to fix the problem. Database XYZ had two tables crashed that have been repaired manually because the automatic repair was unable to repair them". Most providers will add more features to these lists, but these are the must have ones. The kind of management you may need usually depends on how critical is your website and your budget. There is no need of full management for a personal blog. If it's a corporate website, then probably you will need something with full management service. Use this simple chart to decide... How much downtime is a dissaster event for you or your business? - Less than 1 hour --> Fully managed, make sure the provider can give you fast response and fix times. On some providers prices a bit more. - Less than 4 hours --> Fully managed. - Between 4 and 8 hours --> Fully managed or semi managed on steroids - Between 8 and 16 hours -- > Basic managed - Between 16 and 24 hours --> Basic managed or no managed at all. - More than 24 hours --> No management at all. Just have a backup handy and when your server crashes completely get a new one and reinstall from backup.
