Run a fsck and see if it can repair the errors.

When you ran the fsck did it fix the problems with the file system, or is it still read-only?

There is no unmount command.
It's called umount.
As for the mysql error, it just means the process wasn't started.

What kind of O/S is this? Do you by any chance have a rescue CD which includes a lot of our basic diagnostics/recovery utilities? If not, do you know the release information of it? If so, then a rescue CD can easily be tracked down. Note that even the installation CD offers rescue capabilities.
While you are in read-only mode can we get your drive/volume mappings/information to see if we can spot something. Maybe using the rescue CD, extract the syslog entries during boot (if linux: /var/log/message) to see if there is anything else worth seeing.
What kind of file system are you utilizing? If journalled, was it enabled?
