Where setting up a development project and where looking for a portal script. We need something with a front end with a CMS/Downloads/Wiki or knowledge base Backend that allows us to have different user levels such as admin/manager, allows us to communicate with other members working on the project, and also something like a project management script. Integration with forum system would be handy If you can suggest something (preferably open source and the project is) would be great

How about Joomla and the Docman extension? You can bridge to phpBB for the forum or use Fireboard, a native forum. I'm not sure about the project management script, but there may even be a Joomla extension for that, too.

If you ask me, stick away from Joomla. Find something that offers one single package which has all what you require. What you ask is something very common and you should find a script that does it all. Integrating multiple scripts only makes it difficult to upgrade, maintain and secure the site.

You make a very good point. It is more work to upgrade with something like Joomla, Drupal, etc. I don't know of any single product that offers all the project requires, though. The forums are the kicker...

You can hire someone to make a backend exactly according to your requirements in a server side scripting lang like PHP. This will be a full customized solution.
