My ISP is blocking ports from 2082+

Posted by Max Renn, 03-19-2007, 10:09 AM
Hello, I can no longer access Cpanel/WHM as my ISP is blocking all kinds of ports. Is there an easy way to give Cpanel and WHM a port number below 2082? I have full root access. Thanks, Steve

Hi http://cpanelproxy.net/ is a workaround for this so you can access WHM/cPanel from port 80

Your ISP is blocking your outgoing traffic? Step one would be find a new ISP.

The cpanelproxy method is a nice workaround yes. I've even heard from some clients that connecting via the proxy goes faster than using the default port (maybe due to QoS configured by the ISP?). Another method that requires no installation of scripts would be to use SSH tunneling. Though, this requires SSH access to the server (or another server for which port 2082 is not blocked).

I second that. Any ISP that's blocking ports like this for no reason whatsoever (there's really no reason to block this) isn't worth sticking with. You can also use port redirection. This can be setup in IPTABLES. It used to be I could remember how to do this, but since I haven't had to use it in a while, I have forgotten

is it secure?

As you have full root access, just use ssh tunnel, it is secure and safe. and you can easily bypass filters of your ISP. Greets

Thats fairly strange, are you hosting off a DSL/Cablemodem or something? I'd find a new ISP personally... Should be fairly straightforward to change the port number, otherwise I'd go with the SSH tunnel mentioned...

Hey, Who is your isp? My isp blocks almost all of my ports, including 80 and 21, pretty stupid if you ask me. I use Verizon Fios. Hope you get your port problem solved, and if anyone knows how to get around a port 80 block let me know.

You are obviously talking about incoming connections being blocked, not outgoing connections. What I understand from monkey junkie is that his ISP is blocking outgoing connections... If your ISP would block outgoing connections to port 80, you wouldn't be able to post a reply on this forum, in fact you wouldn't be able to visit any website at all... ISP's blocking incoming connections on ports below 1024 is very common (unfortunately) because they probably do not allow their clients to host servers.

You can get FIOS with 5mbpsup and 5 down for $200 a month and you also get 6 IPs. [(business fios) Tier1 verizon backbone should be good for hosting]

You can change cpanel port's in cpanel config.

I have found using port forwarding in the wireless router setup a way around their filters. By default, they block all inbound connections. You can change that in the router. Lots of fun stuff to play with in there and pretty easy to figure out. They have many preconfigured items for port forwarding.

hello, cpanelproxy is safe and is good. It's handy and i use it sometimes. But you can always ask your ISP to unblock those ports.
