What happens if you run
/scripts/rebuildnamedconf
Then restart bind?

I tried that, still says "attempting to locate /etc/named.conf..." when I go to edit a dns zone

scripts/rebuildnamedconf will not create the /etc/named.conf if there is that file is absent. So, first create a file named /etc/named.conf and then run the commands
/scripts/rebuildnamedconf
/scripts/fixrndc
Let us know how it goes.
