iptables or apf?

What do you prefer or what do you think is better, iptables or apf for a firewall? I currently am using iptables.

APF is iptables - it's just a bunch of pre-configured scripts that make it easier to manage things like allowing/denying ports which controls iptables basically. I think most would use APF.

Also I have another question, I get a lot of spam that are images, which are the spam itself, how would you go about filtering, or detecting something like this, I didn't think it was really possible besides blocking the images itself but is there any other methods anyone knows of?

Rather than APF, you should look into csf simply because it's a LOT more advanced than APF could be. As far as images and emails, that you won't have much luck with using APF/CSF or any iptables protocol. You're better off using something to scan the mail BEFORE it hits your MTA (exim, etc) , something like ASSP which will weed out a LOT of garbage.

fuzzyocr works well with spamassassin for spam image prevention.

Spam Assassin outputs the scores it applies to each email in its header. Once the sum of the scores reaches a particular number it is marked as spam. If the image spam is getting through you should look to see what scores spam assassin is giving the unwanted emails and then editing its config to increase the value of how it scores so it is counted as spam.
