My positive experience with Hostgator

Posted by n1c0_ds, 05-17-2012, 11:24 AM
After being recommended to choose Hostgator by absolutely everyone, I gave it a try for my reseller account instead of going with iWeb. Although I'm familiar with server management, I wanted a simple solution to put my clients online (I'm a web designer). So far, so good! Aside from its standard cPanel setup, there isn't much to say about the plan itself. It's rather affordable, which is a lovely thing. I didn't get any downtime yet, except for some slowdowns a few months ago. The really good part is the support. Unlike most hosts I've been with, the Hostgator CSRs are really knowledgable, and always helped me, even when I was in the wrong. The replies on the live chat can take quite some time, but not nearly as much as some other hosts, and I never get canned responses. The only negative point is that I need to pay for SSH access to subaccounts. Otherwise, it's a mighty fine host! So far, it's my most recommended host. I've also worked with iWeb (so-so support) and A Small Orange (not cheap, terrible billing interface), and I've stuck to hostgator for good.

Yes, for your standard cpanel-type linux hosting, they are hard to beat.

It's no wonder everyone was recommending them. They are now my go-to choice, but I gotta say HostGator was pretty good too for non-reseller hosting

Great to hear you are happy with them, follow up in a few months with another review.

How long have you been with HostGator? By the way, great portfolio.

iweb is most probably a dedicated host I guess. So their support might not be as good as hostgator, and hostgator definitely is a good host, and no one might be able to beat their support.

There are definitely companies able to beat their support in my opinion. Take SimpleXWebs. HawkHost. And a VPS host - Linode

If you ever need/want a Canadian shared host, look at Crocweb. Did you know that A Small Orange is also owned by HostGator's owner? (One of his other companies.) Just an FYI. Though I'd agree it was slow and semi-problematic in past years.

Where did you hear of this? The site and it's claims are great after looking through it, but I see no reference on it's affliations with Hostgator.

http://forums.asmallorange.com/topic...on-impact-aso/ Unless that's changed, and I don't think it has. It's just a piece of trivia.

Actually, they've recently splitted in two companies, and Funio is now their shared hosting provider.

In my opinion hostgator is too expensive.

Really?! Compared to what?

Hostgator helped me a lot at my startup. I have used them for 2 years no issues with them

Compared to free!

We all know what free gets you though

Yep, I"ve used them for my "small fry" customers that need your basic hosting package for years. With all the extras and support, and the fact I've never had anything but minor issues, I'd recommend them in a heartbeat.
